New Shanghai Restaurant fined for underpaying 85 workers
New Shanghai Restaurant in Charlestown reportedly underpaid the workers a total $583,000 over a period of 16 months and used false records to cover it up.
A Federal Court judge said the restaurant’s actions were “essentially criminal in nature” before ordering it to pay $128,000 in wages owed to its workers. The restaurant was fined an additional $300,00 and the owner and two staff members were penalised a further $95,000 between them.
The underpayments were initially brought to the attention of the Fair Work Ombudsmen in May last year. A spokesperson for the Fair Work Ombudsmen welcomed the court’s decision this week and labelled the restaurant’s actions a “deliberate exploitation” of staff members.
