Will I Get Fed on My Flight? Here’s What You Can Expect From Major U.S. Airlines

When booking a domestic flight in the U.S., many passengers assume that food won’t be part of the deal — and in some cases, they’re right. Full meals are no longer standard across all cabin classes, especially for short-haul trips in economy. But that doesn’t mean food is off the table altogether.
In fact, several U.S. airlines still provide complimentary snacks and beverages on shorter flights, and full meal service on long-haul or international routes — even in economy. Some airlines also offer upgraded food and drink options for purchase. Travellers with elite frequent flyer status often get extra perks as well, such as complimentary premium beverages.
Here’s a look at the current food and beverage offerings from four major U.S. airlines, so you know what to expect next time you fly.
American Airlines
Flights Over 250 Miles (Main Cabin and Main Cabin Extra):
Passengers receive complimentary soft drinks including tea, coffee, water, and Coca-Cola products, along with light snacks like Biscoff cookies and pretzels.
Food and Drinks Available for Purchase (Domestic Economy):
Travellers can buy premium snacks as well as beer, wine, and spirits.
Complimentary Meals on Select International and Long-Haul Routes:
Economy passengers flying between the U.S. and destinations in Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, the Middle East, selected South American cities, or Hawaii — along with a few domestic transcontinental routes such as JFK to LAX or SFO — receive complimentary meals and alcoholic beverages in addition to the standard snacks and drinks.
Premium Cabins:
First class, premium economy, and business class passengers on short international trips or flying Flagship Business or Flagship First are served elevated meals and regionally inspired menus. They also enjoy a curated selection of wine, beer, and spirits.
Delta Air Lines
Flights Over 250 Miles (Main Cabin):
Delta offers free soft drinks (tea, coffee, water, and Coca-Cola products) and a range of snacks on domestic flights over 250 miles.
Food and Drinks Available for Purchase (Economy):
Snack boxes are available for purchase, as well as beer, wine, and spirits.
Included in Upgraded Cabins:
Travellers flying in Comfort+, First Class (domestic), Premium Select, or Delta One receive complimentary alcoholic beverages. On select domestic First Class and all Delta One domestic flights, hot meals are served.
While complimentary full meals might no longer be the norm for all economy-class travellers on U.S. domestic routes, there are still plenty of options depending on the airline, route, and ticket type. If you’re flying internationally or in a premium cabin, chances are good you’ll receive a meal — and even on shorter flights, snacks and drinks help make the journey more comfortable.
