A Hidden Gem Beyond Paris: Why This German-Speaking City Stands Out Among 89 Countries

This story is based on an interview with 60-year-old John Lovell, who has travelled to 89 countries and hundreds of cities throughout his life. Lovell is the president of Travel Leaders Network, a company specialising in luxury holidays, cruises, and tours. The interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.
Over the years, I’ve explored 89 countries and lived in numerous cities. There’s truly not a single destination I didn’t enjoy—but some, without a doubt, have left a deeper impression than others.
I’ve visited remote locations like Tahiti, home to some of the most stunning beaches and overwater bungalows imaginable. I’ve explored tiny countries like the Vatican, and ventured through South Africa, where I found some of the world’s best vineyards and game reserves.
Of course, I’ve also spent time in iconic European cities like Paris and London—both places where I’ve not only visited but actually lived. I adore both cities, and they’d easily make my list of top five favourites. But if I had to choose one place to settle down permanently—apart from my constant travels—it would be Salzburg.
Salzburg Has Captured My Heart
Salzburg is my absolute favourite for many reasons. It’s compact and charming, offering a more intimate feel than bustling cities like Paris or London. There are fewer tourists, making it easier to immerse yourself in the local culture. And above all, the people are genuinely welcoming.
The natural beauty of Salzburg is nothing short of breathtaking. The region is lush and green, with lakes surrounding the city and rivers flowing through its centre. The landscapes alone are enough to make you pause in admiration.
Although the winters can be a touch too chilly for my liking, the overall climate is quite mild—similar to the countryside of New York. For much of the year, the weather is pleasant and enjoyable.
A City Steeped in Culture and History
Salzburg is steeped in history. It boasts fascinating museums and is famously the birthplace of composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The city’s architectural mix of Gothic and Baroque styles, along with its magnificent Catholic churches, creates an atmosphere that feels both regal and welcoming.
It’s also widely recognised as one of the filming locations for the 1965 classic The Sound of Music. The movie, based on the real-life Austrian von Trapp family, includes iconic scenes shot in Salzburg—like the famous “Do-Re-Mi” performance by Maria and the children at Mirabell Gardens and the Pegasus Fountain.
Something for Everyone—and It Won’t Break the Bank
One of the many things I love about Salzburg is its affordability. It’s not an overly touristy hotspot, which means prices remain reasonable. Most hotels fall within the mid-to-upscale range, with nightly rates typically between €87 and €350. That makes it an ideal destination that won’t put a massive dent in your travel budget.
Whether you’re a history buff, a music lover, a fan of scenic landscapes or simply seeking a peaceful European city experience, Salzburg offers something for everyone. For me, it’s a city that not only rivals Paris—it surpasses it.
