Airbnb vs. Vrbo: Which Vacation Rental Platform is Best for You?

When planning a trip and considering vacation rentals, two major platforms dominate the conversation: Airbnb and Vrbo. These platforms are among the most popular choices for travelers seeking short-term accommodations. According to Madeline List, a senior research analyst at Phocuswright, it’s common to find the same property listed on both platforms, given the significant overlap in their offerings.

“There is definitely some overlap between the two platforms,” List told USA TODAY. Despite their similarities, key differences between Airbnb and Vrbo may influence which platform is best suited for your travel needs.

Why Airbnb Stands Out

One of Airbnb’s major advantages is the sheer scale of its offerings.

“Airbnb is huge in the space, and it’s certainly dominant,” said List. According to Phocuswright’s Spring 2024 update, Airbnb boasts more than 7.7 million listings worldwide, a figure that far surpasses Vrbo’s 2 million.

Airbnb also enjoys stronger brand recognition. In Phocuswright’s 2021 U.S. Short-Term Rental Report, 78% of surveyed users were aware of Airbnb as a provider of vacation rentals, compared to 50% for Vrbo. The survey sampled adult internet users in the U.S. who had stayed in short-term rentals for leisure in the previous two years.

While these numbers reflect past trends, List noted that Vrbo has been actively working to increase its visibility. “Vrbo has done a push for more brand recognition,” she said.

Beyond brand awareness, Airbnb emphasizes unique experiences. The platform frequently promotes distinctive properties and immersive stays that go beyond traditional lodging. This effort is highlighted by Airbnb’s new “Icons” category, featuring exceptional stays like the clock room at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris or a replica of Carl Fredricksen’s house from Pixar’s Up. Listings range from houseboats to yurts, making the platform an appealing choice for travelers seeking something out of the ordinary.

Airbnb’s Chief Business Officer, Dave Stephenson, shared his perspective: “We believe Airbnb offers more unique places to stay and unforgettable experiences than any other travel platform. Whether you’re traveling solo or with a group, there are Airbnb listings that cater to every budget and preference, delivering magical experiences almost anywhere in the world.”

The Bottom Line

Both Airbnb and Vrbo are excellent platforms for vacation rentals, and their overlapping inventory gives travelers plenty of choices. However, Airbnb’s larger inventory, stronger brand presence, and focus on unique stays make it a compelling option for those seeking memorable travel experiences. Meanwhile, travelers should consider their specific needs and preferences when choosing the platform that best fits their trip.
